Search and Care Participates in NYC Annual Power of Aging Event

September 3 – Yesterday Search and Care was honored to participate again in NYC’s Annual Power of Aging Well event, a citywide health festival that brings together older adults for fun activities, community-building, and vital health information. Robin, our Outreach Coordinator, served as an emcee for the event, and our Silver Circles Team, led by coordinator Jacob, tabled to raise awareness about our intergenerational technology and telehealth coaching service. 

We are grateful to the sponsors of this impactful event—including Councilmember Encarnacion, Metropolitan Hospital, Union Settlement, and NYC Aging for putting everything together, and were so proud to participate! We’re excited for more opportunities to bring together our community for meaningful support.

Intergenerational Connections Initiative Recognized by Eisner Foundation

July 15th – We are honored to be included in a feature article by the Eisner Foundation about staying connected while aging and our Intergenerational Connections Initiative.

At Search and Care, the community we form is more than just professional: it’s family. A recent feature article by The Eisner Foundation shows just that, telling the story of Diane, an older New Yorker living in the Bronx, and Sebastian, a rising first-year at Columbia. Diane, who participates in a number of Search and Care’s groups and programs, told the foundation, “They make you feel like family. Some places I go, I feel like I don’t belong. I never got that feeling here.”

The article comes as we continue our recently launched Intergenerational Connections initiative, an innovative program that brings together staff, volunteers, and older adults to address significant needs and care gaps, and develop an intergenerational community that builds empathy and friendship between generations. The Eisner Foundation, a key supporter of the initiative, provides a personal account of just how meaningful this program can be for older and younger participants.

Funder Spotlight: New York Foundation for Eldercare
Search and Care and the New York Foundation for Eldercare (NYFE) have teamed up to help older New Yorkers age safely, with support and companionship at home. With a mission of “helping older New Yorkers enjoy healthier, safer, more productive, and dignified lives”, NYFE and Search and Care make a great team with a shared goal.
This year, NYFE helped support four vital Search and Care programs: Silver Circles Tech and Telehealth Education, Money Matters financial guidance, Groups socialization opportunities, and Nutrition and Emergency Groceries. This impactful work was designed to provide wraparound, holistic care for our clients, supplementing our core Care Management to address the totality of clients’ needs. Our client Mr. T is a great example of this work.
Mr. T came to Search and Care through an NYC Department for the Aging (now NYC Aging) case management subcontract which refers clients dealing with complex, severe challenges. Mr. was no exception: while receiving Meals on Wheels, he was facing food insecurity, and our Team was working to secure him SNAP benefits. During this period, his Meals on Wheels delivery was stolen, leaving him without food or the ability to obtain it. We quickly stepped in, arranging a grocery delivery the following day. Soon afterwards we secured SNAP benefits, and identifying other serious problems (e.g., clutter, rent arrears), made a client approved Adult Protective Service referral and continued to provide him with our holistic care. Mr. T has since been stabilized, and earlier this year was moved to our agency monitoring list for friendly calls (also supported by NYFE) not only to ensure he is continuing to age safely, but to provide a reminder that someone cares.

Search and Care Board President Orla Coleman joined Peter Lovatt (AKA Dr. Dance) on Good Day New York to discuss the benefits of dance and movement for brain health.

They also highlighted the important work Search and Care is doing to support older adults age 60+ in staying active, engaged, and connected in their communities.

Eisner Foundation

Search and Care is a proud recipient of a $100,000 award from the Eisner Foundation this year to expand and strengthen our Intergenerational Connections initiative.  The Initiative includes Search and Care programs including Silver Circles Technology Training, Telehealth Access, Groups, Telephonic Monitoring, and our IChoose teen health and leadership program.
We are thrilled to be partnering with the Eisner Foundation and we look forward to a robust and impact year ahead.

The Perfect Scam Podcast – Thanksgiving Episode Featuring Search and Care LMSW Millie Gonzalez

Thanksgiving is a time for sharing food with family and feeling grateful. It means a lot to Georgete, a struggling mom who just wants to make the holiday special for her kids. She relies on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits to get by, and when her Thanksgiving dinner is essentially stolen from her, she is devastated. The theft is part of a highly organized crime and Georgete is one of hundreds of thousands of victims, resulting in $150 million of taxpayer money stolen by criminals. And the scam is still happening all over the country, hurting an already vulnerable population.
